Join RMAEP Utah on Thursday, June 25th at Geosyntec from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm for an informative lunch and learn about the Great Salt Lake and the dust generated as it dries up!
University of Utah atmospheric scientist Kevin Perry will be giving us a clear, science-based look at how a shrinking Great Salt Lake is exposing lakebed, generating dust, and raising new questions about air quality, public health, and Utah’s future. This presentation explains the causes of lake decline, what researchers have learned about dust hotspots and contaminants, and why restoring water to the lake remains the most important long-term solution.
Kevin Perry is a Professor of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Utah. He earned a B.S. in Meteorology from Iowa State University and a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences from the University of Washington. His research focuses on air quality, dust emissions, and environmental systems in the Intermountain West, with particular emphasis on Great Salt Lake. He is a member of the Great Salt Lake Strike Team and a Presidential Societal Impact Scholar at the University of Utah, working at the intersection of science, public health, and policy to support data-driven environmental decision-making.
